Best Dance Backpacks for Ballet Students: What to Look For

A good dance backpack makes the journey to and from ballet class much easier — for the dancer and for the parent carrying it. But not every backpack works well for a ballet student’s specific kit. Here is what to look for.

Why Ballet Students Need a Specific Dance Bag

A typical ballet student carries: ballet shoes, tights, leotard, warm-up clothes (cardigan, leg warmers), water bottle, snack, hairpins and a hairnet, possibly a character skirt and shoes. That is a significant amount of kit — and it needs to be organised so the dancer can find things quickly and change efficiently between school and class.

A regular school backpack can technically hold all of this, but it lacks the dedicated pockets that keep shoes away from clothes and make the quick pre-class change less chaotic.

Key Features to Look for in a Dance Backpack

Dedicated Shoe Compartment or Pocket

The most important feature. Ballet shoes — and especially character shoes — get dusty and dirty from studio floors and should not be mixed with clean clothes or food. A separate zippered pocket with mesh or ventilation keeps shoes isolated and allows them to air out.

Main Compartment Size

A volume of 15–20 litres is ideal for most ballet students. This is enough to hold clothes, a water bottle, and extras without being so large the bag becomes uncomfortable to carry. Younger children (Primary grade) may be better served by a smaller bag (10–15 litres) that does not overwhelm them.

Water Bottle Pocket

A side pocket specifically designed for a water bottle is a must. A loose water bottle in the main compartment is a wet-kit disaster waiting to happen. Look for a deep, snug side pocket that holds a 500ml–750ml bottle upright without it falling out.

Smaller Organisation Pockets

At least one small external or internal pocket for hair accessories, pins, ribbons and small items keeps these from rattling around at the bottom of the bag where they are impossible to find under time pressure.

Padded Straps

For children who carry their bag to school and then to class, padded and adjustable straps are important for comfort. Unpadded straps on a loaded bag cause shoulder pain quickly, particularly for younger children.

Durability and Easy Cleaning

Ballet class three or four times per week means the bag gets a lot of use. Look for durable zips (metal rather than plastic), a reinforced base, and a fabric that can be wiped clean — nylon and polyester are much more practical than canvas for everyday use.

Drawstring Bags vs Backpacks

Drawstring bags (gymsacks) are lighter and simpler but offer less organisation. They work well as a secondary bag — for holding just shoes and tights when the child already has a school bag. As a primary dance bag, a proper backpack with compartments is significantly more practical, especially for students carrying multiple items to and from class.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size backpack do I need for ballet class?

For most ballet students aged 7 and above, a 15–20 litre backpack is the right size. This holds ballet shoes, clothes, a water bottle and accessories comfortably without being too heavy or bulky. Younger children may prefer a slightly smaller bag that is easier to manage independently.

Should I buy a dance-specific backpack or a regular backpack?

A dance-specific bag with a dedicated shoe compartment is genuinely more practical than a general backpack for ballet students. The shoe compartment alone — keeping dirty studio shoes away from clean clothes — is worth the slight premium over a general bag. Look for this feature as a minimum when choosing.

What colour dance backpack should I buy?

Practically speaking, darker colours (black, navy, deep pink) hide dirt far better than pale colours for a bag that goes to a dance studio regularly. Check whether the school has a colour requirement — some schools specify a school bag style for uniformity. Otherwise, black is the most versatile and practical choice.

Can my child use their dance backpack as a school bag too?

Yes — many dance students use one bag for both school and dance, packing and repacking as needed. A backpack in a neutral colour with enough compartments to keep dance kit and school books organised works well for this. The shoe compartment prevents dirty shoes from contaminating schoolwork.
